Best 4WD Lighting Setup for Night Driving, Camping and Off-Roading

Factory headlights are built for suburban streets, not for spotting a roo on the shoulder of a dark outback highway at 100km/h, threading a technical track after dusk, or setting up camp once the sun's already down. A proper 4WD lighting setup isn't one product, it's a handful of different light types, each doing a specific job, and knowing which one covers which situation is the difference between a genuinely useful setup and an expensive pile of lights that don't quite solve any single problem well.

Start With the Job, Not the Product

The most common mistake in building a lighting setup is buying the biggest, brightest light bar available and assuming it covers everything. In practice, night driving, technical off-roading, and camp illumination each want a different beam pattern and a different type of light, and no single product does all three well.

Break the problem into three separate jobs:

  • Long-distance highway and outback driving, where early detection of wildlife or hazards at speed is the priority

  • Slow, technical off-road driving, where wide, close-range visibility around the vehicle matters more than distance

  • Stationary camp and work lighting, where flood coverage and low glare matter more than throw distance

Driving Lights: Spot vs Flood vs Combo Beams

Spot beam lights throw a narrow, concentrated beam a long way down the road, which is exactly what you want for open highway and outback driving where the priority is seeing a hazard, an animal, a stray stock beast, well before you reach it. The trade-off is limited peripheral coverage; a spot beam lights up what's directly ahead and not much either side of it.

Flood beam lights spread a wide, shorter-range beam, which suits slower, technical driving where you need to see the edges of the track, obstacles either side of the vehicle, and terrain changes rather than what's 300 metres up the road.

Combo beam light bars blend both patterns into one unit, throwing distance down the centre while still lighting up the sides reasonably well. For most touring setups covering a mix of highway running and off-road tracks, a combo bar as the primary driving light, paired with a set of dedicated long-range spotlights for genuinely open, high-speed sections, covers the widest range of real conditions without needing to swap lights for different terrain.

Headlight Upgrades: Worth Doing, Within the Rules

Factory halogen headlights on most 4WDs, including the 70 Series range, are genuinely underwhelming by modern standards, and an upgrade here makes a real difference to everyday night driving, not just remote touring.

A few things worth knowing before upgrading:

  • Any headlight modification needs to comply with Australian Design Rules (ADR) and be correctly aimed. Poorly aimed or non-compliant lighting can dazzle oncoming traffic and is a genuine road safety issue, not just a compliance technicality.

  • LED or HID conversion kits improve colour temperature and clarity over factory halogens, reducing eye strain on long night drives, but quality varies significantly between products, and a poorly made kit can perform worse than the factory globes it replaces.

  • Auxiliary driving lights are a separate consideration from headlight upgrades, and legally they're only to be used on high beam or off public roads, they're not a substitute for compliant low-beam headlights in normal traffic.

Work Lights and Reverse Lights

Distinct from driving lights, work lights are about illuminating close-range tasks rather than the road ahead, loading gear onto a tray in the dark, reversing a trailer into a tight camp spot, or setting up a rooftop tent after a long day's drive.

LED work lamps mounted on a canopy, rear bar, or reversing area are a low-cost, high-value addition for exactly these situations. They're not about distance or beam pattern sophistication, they just need to throw enough even, wide light to make a task safe and manageable without needing a handheld torch or headlamp for everything.

Camp Lighting: A Genuinely Different Category

Camp lighting has almost nothing in common with driving or work lights, and it's worth treating as its own category rather than an afterthought once the vehicle lighting is sorted.

  • Ambient area lighting, LED strip lights or panel lights mounted under an awning or canopy, provides soft, wide illumination for cooking, eating, and general camp activity without the harshness of a work light aimed straight at your dinner.

  • Warm colour temperature lighting is easier on the eyes for extended camp use and attracts fewer insects than cooler, bluer light, worth considering for anywhere you're spending hours sitting under the light rather than briefly working under it.

  • Battery draw matters here too. Camp lights left running for hours each evening add up over a multi-day stop, and running them off a properly set up auxiliary battery system, rather than the vehicle's starter battery, avoids the classic problem of a flat battery on the morning you're trying to leave camp.

Wiring It Properly Matters as Much as the Lights Themselves

A quality light bar wired poorly performs worse than a cheaper light wired correctly. A few basics that get skipped more often than they should:

  • Relay and fuse protection for any auxiliary lighting circuit, rather than wiring directly off an existing circuit that wasn't designed for the extra load

  • Appropriately rated wiring gauge for the length of run and current draw, particularly for light bars mounted well forward of the battery

  • A dedicated switch panel, so different light circuits, driving lights, work lights, camp lights, can be run independently rather than all-or-nothing

This is the part of a lighting setup that doesn't show up in photos but is exactly what separates a reliable, long-lasting install from one that develops mysterious electrical gremlins a year down the track.

Putting a Complete Setup Together

For a genuine touring vehicle that covers highway driving, technical tracks, and camping, a realistic lighting setup typically includes:

  • A combo beam light bar as the primary driving light for mixed conditions

  • Dedicated spotlights for long, open highway and outback sections where early hazard detection matters most

  • LED work lights mounted for loading, reversing, and general vehicle-area tasks

  • Warm-toned ambient camp lighting run independently off the auxiliary battery system

  • Correctly rated wiring, relays, and a dedicated switch panel, tying the whole system together safely

None of this needs to happen in one go. Most owners build a lighting setup in stages, starting with whichever gap causes the most day-to-day frustration, usually driving lights or camp lighting, and adding the rest as the build develops.
